What is eczema?

Eczema, also known as atopic dermatitis, is a chronic skin condition that causes a dry, itchy rash. It usually appears during childhood, and symptoms may come and go and get better or worse over time. It’s also possible to “outgrow” eczema.

Your skin serves as your body’s first line of defense against outside invaders. Eczema damages this barrier function, making your skin more susceptible to dryness and infection.

The skin condition isn’t contagious, but it causes uncomfortable symptoms such as itchy or burning skin that affects daily life.

People with eczema are also more likely to have other chronic conditions such as hay fever or asthma.

What causes eczema?

Researchers are still investigating what causes someone to develop eczema. However, they theorize the skin condition may occur from a combination of genetic and environmental factors that trigger an immune system reaction, leading to skin inflammation.

People with eczema have an immune system that overreacts to irritating or allergic substances. This overreaction causes an irritating rash.

Whether physical (illness or injury) or emotional (work or life struggles), stress may cause or worsen eczema.

What can I expect during an eczema evaluation?

You can expect a patient-centered exam when you visit Heights Dermatology to find help for your itchy rash. The dermatology practice treats patients of all ages and can provide guidance and treatment for your child and their rash.

Your provider asks detailed questions about your symptoms, including the frequency and severity of the rash. They also ask about factors you think might trigger eczema.

They examine your skin and may take a sample of the rash to confirm or rule out a specific skin condition. Heights Dermatology also does skin allergy testing and blood tests to check for other causes that might explain the underlying cause of the rash.

What are my treatment options for eczema?
