What is Botox?

Botox is a neurotoxin made from Clostridium botulinum. When given in small doses in the right areas, Botox stops muscle activity or blocks the transmission of nerve signals to get the desired effects.

Though Botox has many uses, like treatment for excessive sweating and chronic migraines, Heights Dermatology provides Botox injections to minimize the appearance of lines and wrinkles on the face.

The practice uses the brands Botox Cosmetic and Xeomin® to rejuvenate your look.

What does Botox treat?

Botox treats dynamic wrinkles. These are the wrinkles that form from repeated facial expressions, including:

  • Crow’s feet at the outside corner of your eyes
  • Frown lines in between your eyebrows
  • Worry lines on your forehead

When you squint or frown, the facial muscles create grooves that cause the skin to fold.

As you get older and your skin loses its strength and resilience because of a slowdown in collagen production, your skin can no longer bounce back from the repeated folding. This creates more permanent lines that are etched into your face.

Botox works by stopping the muscle movement that causes the folding, giving your skin the time it needs to relax and smooth itself out.

What happens during Botox injections?

Your dermatologist at Heights Dermatology customizes your Botox injection treatment plan after a consultation. They review the details of your injections, so you know what to expect.

Your dermatologist uses a thin, fine needle when injecting Botox, so there’s no need for numbing cream or anesthesia. After cleaning your skin with an antiseptic agent, your provider carefully and expertly injects small amounts of Botox into specific points in your skin to get the desired results.

Injections take 20 minutes or less, and there’s no downtime following your session. You may have some redness or soreness at the injection site, but these side effects disappear within 24 hours.

What results can I expect from Botox?

You may see improvements in your look within a few days after your injections. However, it takes up to two weeks to see the full effects.

Botox injections last 3-4 months. Heights Dermatology recommends you schedule your next Botox session once you see a return of your lines and wrinkles.

Regular Botox injections weaken the facial muscle, prolonging the results. It also prevents new lines and wrinkles from forming. Heights Dermatology also offers fillers and may recommend combining Botox and fillers to get the most dramatic results.
