Venous stasis dermatitis is an inflammatory skin condition that occurs commonly in the lower extremities. It is most commonly associated with compromised circulation, most frequently in people with chronic venous insufficiency.
At Heights Dermatology, we recognize the discomfort and irritation that this condition causes, and are here to assist you in catching the warning signs before issues become serious.
What is Venous Stasis Dermatitis?
The condition arises due to the inability of veins in the legs to efficiently return blood to the heart. Weakened or damaged vein valves over time allow blood to collect in the lower extremity. The resulting pressure causes the leakage of blood cells and fluid to the surrounding tissue, resulting in irritation of the skin, inflammation, and tissue damage.
Venous stasis dermatitis is most commonly seen in older people, individuals with varicose veins, the obese, or people with a previous history of blood clots or leg injuries. Standing or sitting for long periods of time is likely to aggravate the condition, as can underlying medical conditions like congestive heart failure or deep vein thrombosis (DVT).
Understanding the Symptoms
Early diagnosis of venous stasis dermatitis is critical to the prevention of further conditions such as skin ulcers or infection. The condition slowly develops, with the symptoms gradually worsening over time. These are some common signs:
-
Redness, itchiness, or scaly skin, commonly on the ankles or legs
-
Swollen ankles or lower legs, typically occurring after standing for a long time
-
Brown or reddish skin discolorations
-
Thick or cracked skin, oftentimes appearing like eczema
-
A dull, sore feeling in the legs
-
Weeping or oozing in extreme cases, where the skin may discharge fluid
With time, the skin can harden, called lipodermatosclerosis, or open sores (venous ulcers) can form if the primary circulatory problems are not treated.
