syringomas

At Heights Dermatology, we understand that changes to your appearance can impact your comfort and self-confidence. One condition we often treat is syringomas, benign, glandular growths due to glandular secretions that often appear small, flesh-colored or yellowish bumps. Although benign, syringomas can be a cosmetic concern for most people.

What are Syringomas?

Syringomas are noncancerous growths that appear on the eccrine sweat glands, which are used to regulate the temperature of the human body. They are small, hard bumps that most frequently occur on or around the eyes, particularly on the underside of the eyelids. They may also be present on the top cheeks, breast, abdomen, or genitalia.

While syringomas may occur at any age, they occur more often among adolescents and adults. The condition is more common among women and those who experience a family history of syringomas. While commonly symmetrical-looking, the syringomas may be numerous or scattered, ranging from a few discrete bumps to abundant clusters.

Causes Of Syringomas

The reason for syringomas is often unclear, but they are usually associated with hyperactive sweat glands. Genetic components can be the cause, when it comes to eruptive syringomas, and numerous lesions develop over a relatively short period of time. Some individuals afflicted by certain health conditions like Down syndrome or diabetes mellitus are more susceptible to the formation of syringomas.

They are noncancerous growths and are neither caused by infections nor poor hygiene, nor are they contagious. They may, however, at times prompt individuals to be medically examined to exclude other dermatologic issues.

Symptoms to Watch Out For

Syringomas commonly appear as:

  • Small (1-3 mm), flat-topped or round bumps

  • Flesh-colored, yellowish, or faint

  • Most frequently found around the eyes, specifically the lower eyelids

  • Usually asymptomatic, although they sometimes produce mild itching or irritation

As they can be similar in appearance to other skin conditions like milia, xanthelasma, or acne, professional dermatological examination is necessary for proper diagnosis
