Warts are highly widespread, benign, skin growths that are brought about by human papillomavirus (HPV). They are generally harmless; however, they may be irritating, chronic and even painful. Warts may grow in any part of the body but are most common in the hands, feet, face and genitals. Not all warts go away, some remain or enlarge, and these need higher dermatological attention.
What is the Cause of Warts?
The warts develop as a result of direct infection by HPV, which is a collection of viruses that stimulate the overgrowth of cells on the external skin. The virus spreads by skin-to-skin contact or by using the same surface such as the gym floor or towels and it is highly contagious. The virus can even enter through small cuts or abrasions.
There are different types of warts, which are:
- Common warts: These are usually located on the fingers and hands, and have a raised, rough surface.
- Plantar warts: Located on the soles of feet, and painful as a result of pressure during walking.
- Flat warts: These are smoother and smaller and are likely to be found on the arms, thighs, or face.
Genital warts: Sexually transmitted and need special medical treatment.
Warts Symptoms
The appearance of warts can be different depending on the type of wart and where it is located; the usual signs are:
- Fleshy, grainy little bumps on the skin
- Coarse texture, and pattern of fine black dots (clotted blood vessels)
- Tenderness or pain with pressure, (particularly with plantar warts)
- Patches of growths in a particular location
Anyone can get warts, although they are common among children and those with lowered immune systems and those who engage in frequent use of shared showers or locker rooms.
When Should you Visit the Dermatologist?
When your wart is painful, growing, spreading or not clearing up when treated with over-the-counter medications, it is time to get professional help. Chronic or recurrent warts can indicate that something is wrong with your immune system, this is where immunotherapy comes in. Immunotherapy is a potential solution since it enhances the body defense mechanisms in fighting off the HPV virus.
