Ichthyosis is a group of skin conditions that lead to dry and scaly as well as thickened skin. The word ichthyosis is derived from Greek which means fish, since the skin becomes covered with fish-like scales. Some of the ichthyoses are mild, while others can be severe enough to affect a person's lifestyle.
Causes of Ichthyosis
Ichthyosis can be hereditary or acquired later in life due to other conditions.
- Genetic Ichthyosis: It is present at birth as a result of mutations in skin cell turnover-regulating genes. The most common type is ichthyosis vulgaris due to defective shedding of dead skin cells leading to buildup and scaling. Some other rare types include X-linked ichthyosis, lamellar ichthyosis, and harlequin ichthyosis.
- Acquired Ichthyosis: It occurs in adulthood and is generally linked to medical conditions such as kidney disease, thyroid disorders, cancer, or with certain medications. It is not hereditary as in genetic ichthyosis and can be improved if the causative condition is treated.
Symptoms of Ichthyosis
Symptoms of ichthyosis vary with the type and severity of the condition. Some of the symptoms include:
- Scaly dry skin: The skin can thicken and become rough with visible scaling.
- Peeling or flaking: The skin tends to flake off excessively.
- Discomfort and itching: The buildup of dead skin cells can create irritation and itching.
- Tight skin: The skin tightens and restricts movement in severe cases.
- Fissures and cracks: Fissures and deep cracks in your skin can be painful and can make you more vulnerable to infection.
Symptoms can be present at birth or later in life depending on the type of ichthyosis. Cold weather and low humidity can make symptoms worse.
