Erythroderma

Erythroderma is commonly referred to as exfoliative dermatitis and is a severe and usually long-term skin condition that is marked by extensive redness, inflammation, and scaling covering more than 90% of the body's surface. It may emerge from a pre-existing skin condition or appear acutely and needs immediate treatment by a physician in an effort to control its effects as well as its cause.

Causes of Erythroderma

The condition arises as a result of several triggering factors. In the majority of instances, erythroderma is a result of an underlying skin condition for example psoriasis, eczema (atopic dermatitis), contact dermatitis. It is also triggered by:

  • Drug reactions – Some drugs, such as antibiotics, anti-seizure medications, and blood pressure medications, cause erythroderma as an extreme form of allergy.

  • Skin diseases related to cancer – Diseases such as cutaneous T-cell lymphoma (particularly Sézary syndrome) can cause erythroderma.

  • Idiopathic factors – Sometimes the cause is not known and this makes the condition more challenging to diagnose.

Identifying the underlying cause is essential because it dictates long-term care and treatment.

Symptoms of Erythroderma

The symptoms.of erythroderma are visible and frequently distressing. They include:

  • Generalised erythema – Almost the whole body is reddened, inflamed, and irritated.

  • Severe itching and burning – Discomfort can severely affect day-to-day activities and nighttime sleep.

  • Peeling and flaking of the skin – Great quantities of skin can shed off and cause bare, sensitive skin.

  • Edema and fluid loss – In extensive instances, fluid is lost from the skin and may cause dehydration or temperature regulation problems.

  • Changes in hair and nails – Loss of hair, nail shedding, and skin thickening might happen.

Because of the wide area of skin that is affected, erythroderma has the potential to interfere with the skin's ability to regulate body temperature and protective properties and thus is potentially dangerous if untreated.
