dermatofibromas

Dermatofibromas are noncancerous, but common, skin growths that frequently present on the trunk, legs, or arms. While they are harmless, sometimes they can bring discomfort or cosmetic concern for a patient. We at Heights Dermatology feel that knowledge about skin issues is the first step toward healthy skin and peace of mind.

What Are Dermatofibromas

The dermatofibromas are firm, small nodules that are less than 1 cm in size, but larger ones can develop. They are commonly brown, red, or purplish and may be dimpled or depressed when pinched, which can present as the “dimple sign.” Dermatofibromas are most often painless, but can be itchy or tender, especially when irritated by shaving or clothing.

What Causes Dermatofibromas

The reason for dermatofibromas is often unclear, but they are often attributed to minor skin injury. Insect bites, ingrown hairs, or little wounds can trigger an overgrowth of fibrous tissue within the skin, causing these firm bumps.

More common in adults, dermatofibromas occur more often in women than in men. People who experience frequent skin injuries or who have weakened immune systems can also be more likely to develop them.

Recognizing the Symptoms

Once you learn what to observe, dermatofibromas are relatively easy to recognize. They are typically distinguished by:

  • A raised, firm lump on the skin

  • Brown, reddish, or purplish color

  • Dimpling of the area when pinched

  • Itching or tenderness that is occasional

  • Steady size over time(they grow slowly)

While noncancerous, dermatofibromas may sometimes be mistaken for other skin lesions or conditions. Whenever you see a new skin change or bump, it is always best to have a professional examine it to rule out other causes, like cysts or other more severe skin conditions.
