Cutaneous lupus is a chronic autoimmune skin condition in which the immune system attacks healthy skin cells. While systemic lupus has the potential to affect several body organs, cutaneous lupus mainly affects the skin, where it causes lesions, rashes, and heat or pain in the affected area.
At Heights Dermatology, we understand the complexities and frustrations that go along with skin conditions like cutaneous lupus, so we are here to offer expert assessments and long-term assistance.
What Is Cutaneous Lupus?
The cause of cutaneous lupus is unknown, but it is thought to be as a result of the connection of genetic, environmental, and hormonal influences. Genetic predisposition is higher in people who have a history of autoimmune conditions. Exposure to the sun is also a widely documented cause of flares, especially in individuals with photosensitivity. Some drugs, including both blood pressure medications and anti-fungal medications, have also been associated with the occurrence of drug-induced lupus that affects the skin.
Hormonal factors, such as the level of estrogen can also be involved, since cutaneous lupus is more common in women than in men, especially in the reproductive age group. Additional factors that have also been implicated include smoking and specific infections.
Understanding the Symptoms
Cutaneous lupus has various presentations, with discoid lupus erythematosus (DLE), subacute cutaneous lupus erythematosus (SCLE), and acute cutaneous lupus erythematosus (ACLE) which are the most common types. Symptoms are typically different according to the type but can include:
- Red, scaly, coin-shaped lesions found commonly on the ears, scalp, and face commonly in DLE
- Rash on the exposed skin at the chest, the shoulders, or the upper arms (as seen in SCLE).
- Butterfly-shaped rash on cheeks and nose (ACLE associated with)
- Skin discoloration and scarring
- Loss of hair where lesions occur
- Increased sensitivity to sunlight
They may also worsen with UV exposure and have a profound effect upon the individual’s self-esteem and comfort level on a daily basis.
