Cold Sores

What Are Cold Sores?

Cold sores, also known as fever blisters, are small, painful blisters that most often occur on or around the lips. Cold sores are caused by the herpes simplex virus (HSV-1), which remains in the body indefinitely and can recur due to triggers like stress, illness, sun, hormonal changes, or a weakened immune system. Cold sores are contagious and can be spread through direct skin contact, the sharing of common items, or even a kiss.

A cold sore outbreak usually occurs in a cycle: it starts with a burning or tingling, and then blisters filled with liquid form. They will burst, ooze, and scab, and eventually, they will heal. Cold sores are not a serious medical problem, but they do sting, are unpleasant, and can be embarrassing.

Symptoms of Cold Sores

Cold sores typically come in stages and can last between 7 and 10 days. The most common symptoms are:

  1. Burning and Tingling Sensation – Some people develop itching, burning, or tingling around the mouth before the sore develops.
  2. Blister Formation – Groups of small blisters containing liquid occur, usually on the lips, but occasionally around the nose or chin.
  3. Crusting and Oozing – The blisters burst and discharge a clear liquid and later scab as they recover.
  4. Pain and Irritation – Eating, drinking, or even talking can be painful with cold sores.
  5. Flu-like Symptoms – Some individuals experience fever, swollen lymph nodes, or body pains during an epidemic.
